The Mudik Phenomena

MUDIK interpreted as forth the return process of urban communities, nomads to my hometown. Mudik synonymous with back upstream that could mean the region of origin. And the tradition of going home before the celebration of Eid is already a culture or a culture, so I understand it as Mudik cultural. Mudik as a unique cultural phenomenon and perhaps only one in the world. This phenomenon has been seized  a lot of attention from all circles; governments, economists, sociologists, until local police had to escort the the Mudik flow and back flow from the user community of motorcycle travelers.

The motivation of going home (mudik) is not simply because the momentum of the celebration of Idul Fitri. Hari Raya Idul Fitri I say only as a medium that allows the mudik place. Because back to my hometown outside of Idul Fitri, although beaten by a community of nomads, less commonly known about, isn't it? Yes. Here lies the uniqueness of the culture or cultures forth.

Another motivation is the most knowledgeable travelers community itself. But, of course it is predictable. Motivation can be drawn pemudik (the people) in an attempt to return to the homeland after a long time in the overseas. Sub motivation; celebrate Eid at home, having a long rope Silaturrahmi this press of work lost because of working activity.

Kasada Ceremony: Tenggerese Thanksgiving



Bromo has a remarkable natural panorama. It will never run out of our admiration by the beautiful natural scenery. Mount Bromo derived from Sanskrit, meaning god Brahma, or a major, Mount Bromo is a mountain that is still active and the object of the most famous tourism in East Java. Horrible Fire Battle for Welcoming Nyepi Day





The ritual fires of war is a Hindu tradition in Mataram since 1838 was held in Jalan Selaparang, Cakranegara, which is the location of the battle between the Kingdom Singosari and the Kingdom of Karang Asem.

All Night Leather Puppet Show



Gadjah Mada University will hold an all-night leather puppet show entitled “Wahyu Cakraningrat”. The performance presenting Ki Purbo Asmoro as the Puppeteer (Dalang) is part of the series of events to commemorate the 60th anniversary of UGM. The show will be held on evening,  starting from 20.00 P.M until dawn at Balairung, UGM Central Office.

“We intentionally choose the story of Wahyu Cakraningrat because it has religious values and advice for the young generation of this campus, who will become the next leaders,” said Prof. Timbul Haryono, the professor of Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM

The traditional art event held on the night of 1 Muharram has both religious aspects and hope for the academic community that they can grasp from the story.

Cakraningrat is basically a message for the young campus generation  who will become leaders in the future. It is hoped that they can learn from the characters of Abimanyu, Lakhsmana Mandrakumara and Samba, but not all of those knights get the ‘revelation’ in their life journey. “Abimanyu is Arjuna’s son. They represent the young generation who will lead this country,” said this newly retired professor from Faculty of Cultural Sciences.

Ki Purbo Asmoro  from the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Yogyakarta explained the story of 'Wahyu Cakraningrat’ which tells about Abimanyu and Sembadra who are concerned with the chaotic world, life degradation, and loss of humanism. “He wants to do something to reduce social burden, alleviate poverty and fix the world,” said the puppeteer who has performed in many cities in USA, the UK and Greece.
Separately, Prof. Sutaryo, Chair of Academic Senate of UGM (Gadjah Mada University), said that the show would be suitable with the philosophy of the university that serves as national hall of science and culture. Two important values: personality and be knowledegable are important for students currently studying.

The history of wayang kulit or Leather puppet in Yogyakarta is the same with history of wayang kulit in central java. Leather puppet show is a performance art that has been more than half a millennium of age. Its presence has its own story, in relation with the entrance of Javanese Islam. One of the Wali Songo or the nine pious leaders who spread Islam in Java created the puppet by adopting Wayang Beber or Beber Puppet that grew during the triumph of Hindu-Buddha. Such an adoption was done since leather puppet had been attached to Javanese people so that it became the proper media to spread Islam, while Islam prohibited plastic arts. Consequently, leather puppet was made in order for people to be able to see shadow.

Leather puppet show is done by the puppeteer (dalang) who is also the storyteller. All the night, he plays all the characters of the leather puppets forming human characters made from buffalo skin decorated with motif as the product of leather carving. He has to change the voice character, switch the intonation, produce humor and even sing. In order to make the atmosphere vivid, the storyteller is assisted by musicians who play gamelan - the traditional Javanese music instruments - and the female singers called sinden who sing Javanese songs.

The total characters in leather puppet show number in the hundreds. The puppets that are not played are stuck in banana stem that is placed close to the storyteller. While being played, the puppets will look as shadow from rear view of the white screen in front of the storyteller. The shadow is created by the light from the oil lamp placed at the upper rear of the storyteller that is cut off by the puppets being played on the screen.

Each puppet performance presents different story or act. The act variations are divided into four categories namely lakon pakem, lakon carangan, lakon gubahan, and lakon karangan. Lakon pakem is the standard story that entirely originates from leather puppet literature while lakon carangan is only the main story that also refers to the leather puppet literature. Lakon gubahan does not origin from the leather puppet stories but it uses the places in accordance with leather puppet literature; lakon karangan is entirely a free story.


Ogoh-ogoh Parade : Representation of the Evil Spirit Destroying




Ogoh-ogoh parade is the highlight of the procession of preparation before NyepiOgoh-ogoh are statues built for the Ngrupuk parade, which takes place on the eve of Nyepi day in Bali, Indonesia. Ogoh-ogoh normally have form of mythological beings, mostly demons. As with many creative endeavours based on Balinese Hinduism, the creation of Ogoh-ogoh represents spiritual aims inspired by Hindu philosophy.

The main purpose of the making of Ogoh-ogoh is the purification of the natural environment of any spiritual pollutants emitted from the activities of living beings (especially humans). The forms of Ogoh-ogoh represent the Bhuta-Kala (Bhuta: eternal energy, Kala: eternal time), according to Hindu teachings. The imperceptible potentials of nature cannot be thoroughly explored by anyone. Philosophically, civilized men are required to manage the natural resources without any attempts to damage the environment itself.
Aside from being the symbol of Bhuta-Kala, Ogoh-ogoh is considered a symbol of modes of nature that form the malicious characters of living beings. Ogoh-ogoh is usually made by the group of artists found in villages around Bali. After being paraded on a convoy around the town, finally it is burnt to ashes in a cemetery as a symbol of self-purification.


An Ogoh-ogoh is normally standing on a pad built of timber planks and bamboos. This pad is purposed to sustain the Ogoh-ogoh itself during its being lifted and carried around the village or the town's square. There are normally eight or more men carrying the Ogoh-ogoh on their shoulders. This procession is accompanied by music orchestra performed by the youth. The use of flares is also a main part of the parade.
During the procession, the Ogoh-ogoh is rotated counter clockwise three times. This act is done on every t-junction and roadcross of the village. Rotating the effigies during cremational parade and the eve of Nyepi represents the contact of the bodies with the spirits. It is aimed to bewilder the evil spirits so that they go away and cease harming human beings.

The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is a species of lizard that inhabits the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang in Indonesia.A member of the monitor lizard family (Varanidae), it is the largest living species of lizard, growing to an average length of 2 to 3 metres (6.6 to 9.8 ft) and weighing around 70 kilograms (150 lb). Their unusual size is attributed to island gigantism, since there are no other carnivorous animals to fill the niche on the islands where they live; their large size is also explained by the Komodo dragon's low metabolic rate. As a result of their size, these lizards dominate the ecosystems in which they live.[6Although Komodo dragons eat mostly carrion, they will also hunt and ambush prey including invertebrates, birds, and mammals.

The Komodo dragon uses its tongue to detect, taste, and smell stimuli, as with many other reptiles, with the vomeronasal sense using a Jacobson's organ, a sense that aids navigation in the dark. With the help of a favorable wind and its habit of swinging its head from side to side as it walks, Komodo dragons may be able to detect carrion from 4–9.5 kilometres (2.5–6 mi) away. The dragon's nostrils are not of great use for smelling, as the animal does not have a diaphragm.It only has a few taste buds in the back of its throat..Its scales, some of which are reinforced with bone, have sensory plaques connected to nerves that facilitate its sense of touch. The scales around the ears, lips, chin, and soles of the feet may have three or more sensory plaques

The Komodo dragon was formerly thought to be deaf when a study reported no agitation in wild Komodo dragons in response to whispers, raised voices, or shouts. This was disputed when London Zoological Garden employee Joan Proctor trained a captive specimen to come out to feed at the sound of her voice, even when she could not be seen.

With the Komodo National Park a finalist to become one of the new seven wonders of nature, the government is urging the country to support its bid before voting closes in 2011.


Organized by the Swiss-based New7Wonders Foundation to help preserve the world’s heritage sites, the Komodo National Park has been nominated to become a natural wonder alongside 27 other places around the world, including the Amazon rainforest, Great Barrier Reef and Grand Canyon.

People can vote for the seven final wonders on the campaign’s Web site at www.vote7.com/n7w or by telephone. The winners will be announced in 2011.

The Komodo National Park managed to secure a place among the 28 finalists and is now eligible to be voted for in the final seven natural wonders of the world.The Komodo National Park, which is located in East Nusa Tenggara and encompasses the three main islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar, was established in 1980 to protect and preserve the population and habitat of the unique Komodo dragons native to the area.

Papua is very rich land. Merciful God with saving the Earth's natural resources in Papua. Copper and Gold is a natural resource is very abundant. Gigantic Mudflows in Sidoarjo, East Java: End? no idea!



Sidoarjo mud flow or Lapindo mud or mud in Sidoarjo (Louise), is the outburst events of hot mud   at the site of PT Lapindo Brantas drilling in Renokenongo Village, Porong district, Sidoarjo regency, East Java, since May 27, 2006. Blast of hot mud for several months causing sink of settlements, agriculture, and industry in the three districts in the vicinity, and to influence economic activity in East Java.

Mudflow termination scenario
